This is the only picture I have ever seen of Long Creek Terrace, which was also built for WWII shipyard workers. WWII played the major role in the development of the whole area. I imagine this is the rear of these buildings. This was taken in 1946. These buildings were located at the rear of the present Home Depot, and were removed in the late 1940's or early 1950's, and several were rebuilt on area college campuses.
LONG CREEK - CLARK'S POND
The ice house can be seen here along with ice harvesters at work. I have been attempting to find out when the dam that created Clark's Pond was first built. Does anyone know??
I want to thank Elford Messer for the next four pictures. The ice house caught on fire one night, and was extinguished promptly, but badly damaged. The SPFD conducted a controlled burn at a later date. My father was a firefighter and participated in this. Elford Messer of Thornton Heights was kind enough to share these slides of the controlled burn in January of 1962.
Here is a great aerial photo taken in 1948. Note the rows in the field behind the old Brown farm. The Irving Station presently sits on this property. Also note the ice house. This was long before I-295 and Country Gardens. Many of the houses in the Crockett's Corner area were torn down or moved when I-295 was constructed in the early 1970's.
The concrete rail that was on both sides of the bridge brings back memories. It can be seen in the above picture of the ice house fire too. Pape Chevrolet is where the trees on the far side of Westbrook Street are in this photo. Looks alot different now!
